Toshio and Nobuo insert shinshi needles into the spread-out cloth. The shinshi is made of bamboo with needles coming out each end. The bamboo makes it pliable.
Toshio applying the paste resist liquid made from soaked, squeezed soy beans. Brushing this on helps the cloth absorb the dye.

Nobuo applies the paste resist to the cloth. This go-ire process must be done on a sunny day so that the cloth dries completely.
On this windy day, Mayo and Nobuo tie the cloth to poles to dry after the paste resist is applied.
